'Are You Not Entertained?' Why a Two-Day Test Deserved Its Status as a Authentic Test Match.

Within a glass case on the elevated floor of the Melbourne Cricket Ground sits a vibrant pink outfit worn by Robbie Williams. His show in front of a hundred thousand spectators was seen as a triumph.

It's possible you appreciate the performer. Perhaps you believe he is the finest offering to music known to man. You might take a reasonable stance, admitting that some hits are excellent while others are terrible.

The point being is that amusement can be delivered diversely. Preferences differ. There is not a single method to produce art or even five-day cricket.

The Unrivalled Depth of The Long Game

The traditional format boasts incomparable variety. It is hard to think of another sport where the outcome is so reliant upon the environment.

The climate, the session, the cricket ball – the list is endless. Most important is the wicket.

If the format is a form of art, the wicket is the blank slate on which the cricketers create their art.

An Abstract Contest: The Fourth Test

The Boxing Day fixture between the two sides was an abstract version of cricket, the established format broken apart and reassembled in an unusual manner.

This is not a defence of the surface which produced a triumph and the second two-day Test of the contest.

Having a thick layer on the pitch, leading to a cascade of wickets tumbling in less than a brief period, is not a fair contest between bat and ball.

A Diverse Legacy: The Core of Test Cricket

But any idea this was a diminished spectacle, one that should be marked with an asterisk as inauthentic, is incorrect.

Test cricket is a diverse canvas, over two thousand matches and ongoing. At times, like in Melbourne, the cricket ball does all sorts for the pace bowlers. Other times, it turns square on a spinning track. At other venues, the pitch is unresponsive, other times it explodes.

The exciting finishes are even more exciting owing to the investment committed during quieter periods.

Adjustment: The Core Skill

Specific conditions are accepted more readily than others.

The contention in during the match was that the contest was tipped too far towards the bowlers. That the best players were hindered from playing their natural game.

This level of cricket is about adapting to challenges – assessing the conditions and responding effectively. The top two individual contributions were made by recognized batters. One line-up committed more errors than the other, and thus ended up second best.

Unbridled Joy: The Fan Perspective

Go and inform the devotees who have suffered a long drought that this was not entertaining.

In a corner of the stadium, countless fans celebrated and created an atmosphere, producing a party atmosphere in a heartland of sport.

There was hope as the fielding side surged, momentum when batters scored quickly, and rapturous celebration when the victory was secured.

Extreme Ends: The Spectrum of Test Matches

The venue has a history with difficult wickets. Previously, a game there featured a wicket with the character of a a damp squib.

That contest was a marathon, with few wickets and slow play. The two-day game and that previous match are polar opposites of the scale – both are not ideal, yet value can be ascribed to each.

At this stage into the ongoing battle, it is the shortest games that will be most remembered in the memory.

"It's not the end of the long game at all," said a veteran. "Spectators who have been privileged to see these 48 hours have been treated to some fantastic sport. An unusual spectacle."

Baby Steps: A Glimmer of Hope

In the preparation to this Test, the captain spoke like a man carrying the weight of the world on his mind.

The players responded for him, reinstating the positive demeanor to his countenance.

Emerging talents stepped up with key contributions. These are small positives, not nearly enough to ensure long-term stability, but a foundation to develop from.

In the end, this triumph is added to other notable performances in meaningless games.

As the supporters slipped away into a beautiful night, the squad gathered on the field to begin their own festivities.

Celebrate the win, men. It's well deserved.
