Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of the former president's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
