European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.
