In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
